Background Information: Phil Collins
[Top]
Philip David Charles Collins, better known as Phil Collins, is a British rock / pop musician, known mainly for singing & playing the drums. He was born in London, England. Collins ambitions to wield the sticks started early when he was given a toy drum for Christmas at the age of just three. He instantly harboured ambitions to drum properly & professionally & as he got older, his uncles made him a makeshift kit for him to practise on. By the time he was a teenager he was fully accomplished. His showbusiness career had begun early, as a child actor & model, highlights of which included appearing onstage in Oliver! & being recruited for a non-speaking role in A Hard Days Night, though as one of hundreds of kids paid to scream at the Beatles, he is difficult to make out. In 1970 he answered a Melody Maker classified ad & joined the already successful group Genesis as their drummer. He also performed most of the backing vocals on the bands next four albums & sang lead on two songs which didnt require his drumming skills. Posters Of Phil Collins

After achieving stardom by taking over the lead vocals of Genesis from Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins released his first solo album, Face Value, in 1980. This explores the albums making in a one-hour documentary film, with Collins himself providing the bulk of the insightful commentary. From his home studio, he discusses how the lyrics to In the Air Tonight wrote themselves after his painful divorce & why a drummer would never use a drum machine. Also interviewed are engineer Hugh Padgham, producer Ahmet Ertegun, Genesis colleagues Tony Banks & Mike Rutherford, & many of the studio musicians. Songs such as Behind the Lines, I Missed Again, The Roof Is Leaking, This Must Be Love and, of course, In the Air Tonight are excerpted in both home & concert footage , & Collins accompanies himself at the piano in a wrenching Please Dont Ask, which was cut from the album. In the two decades between the original albums appearance & this 1999 video production, Phil Collins has gone on to become an international solo star, but many still consider Face Value his finest album. This excellent documentary shows you why.
