101 Dalmatians - Live Action

Background Information: Live Action [Top] In film & video, Live action refers to works that are acted out by flesh-and-blood actors, as opposed to animation. Live action is the norm in film & video & thus the term is usually superfluous. It is an important distinction, however, in situations where one might normally expect animation, as in a Disney movie, a video game, or when the work is adapted from a cartoon, such as the Flintstones, Josie & the Pussycats, or Wicked City movies, or The Tick television show. The term is also used within the animation world to refer to non-cartoon characters. For example, in a movie such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit? where humans & cartoons co-exist, live action characters are the real actors such as Bob Hoskins, as opposed to fake actors, such as Roger Rabbit himself. In roleplaying games, live action refers to games in which the players physically act out their characters, as if in a theater production, as opposed to sitting around a table & simply describing the actions their characters take.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Its hard to know who thought it would be a good idea to make a live-action version of Disneys animated classic. The one bright notion anyone had was casting Glenn Close as Disney Übervillainess Cruella de Vil; her flashing eyes & angular features are a perfect match & do credit to what is one of the most indelible animated characters Disney has ever created. The story remains essentially the same, focusing on Cruellas plot to kidnap the puppies of a young married couple & make them into a coat. But the dreaded John Hughes, who wrote this script, fills it with sadistic slapstick & far too few genuine laughs. The human actors work hard, but to little avail; thankfully, theres a posse of puppies to regularly steal scenes when the going gets dreary, although there are only so many laughs to be had from inappropriate dog puddles.
