Dawn Of The Dead
Background Information: Dawn Of The Dead [Top] Dawn of the Dead is a revisioning of George Romero s 1978 original. James Gunn wrote the screenplay, an adaptation of George A Romeros original. In addition to Romeros films Dawn of the Dead also draws influence from the film 28 Days Later with its use of fast intelligent undead in place of the traditional slow lumbering zombies. The film was directed by Zack Snyder. When theres no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth. The plot is relatively simple - for an unexplained reason, the dead have begun coming back to life as the undead after being bitten & killed by the living dead. Ana, who is played by Sarah Polley, goes home from work at the hospital one night & wakes up the next morning to find her suburban Milwaukee town in ruins around her. Her husband is attacked by a young girl from the neighborhood & Ana is forced to flee in her car. After crashing the car, she meets up with Police Officer Kenneth, played by Ving Rhames & they meet other survivors who decide to cross through a mall on their way to what they have heard is a safe town.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] George Romeros 1978 follow-up to his classic Night of the Living Dead is quite terrifying & gory . But in its own way, it is just as comically satiric as the first film in its take on contemporary values. This time, we follow the fortunes of four people who lock themselves inside a shopping mall to get away from the marauding dead & who then immerse themselves in unabashed consumerism, taking what they want from an array of clothing & jewellery shops, making gourmet meals, etc. It is Romeros take on Louis XVI in the modern world: keep the starving masses at bay & crank up the insulated indulgence. Still, this is a horror film when all is said & done & even some of Romeros best visual jokes can make you sweat.
