Monsoon Wedding is a film directed by Mira Nair which depicts various romantic entanglements during a traditional Punjabi wedding in Delhi. Because it was hugely successful across the world, earning over $20 millions at the box office, the film is often described as the highest-grossing Indian film ever made, although it was in fact a co-production between India, the USA & several other countries. DVD Extras: The viewer should watch the film once with Dolby Digital 5.1, then again with the director's commentary, with its excellent social analysis & fascinating anecdotal history. The trailer & behind the scenes are much less interesting. It would have been good to have had a full soundtrack of the songs but the viewer will have to buy the CD.

Mira Nairs Monsoon Wedding is a return to the form of Salaam Bombay!, her 1988 feature. Nairs gift for observation of the everyday & love for her characters makes for a delightful film, with the whole web of family relationships that knit & break during a wedding being spun at a perfect pace.

The excellent performances exceed the often stereotypical roles on offer; the incomparable Nasiruddin Shah as the harassed father, Kulbhushan Kharbanda as the comic uncle, or Shefali Chaya as the orphaned cousin. Nairs sympathetic eye for the unnoticed & the harassed is at its best when showing the tender romance between the servant & Dube , the marigold-munching upwardly-mobile wedding coordinator, who brings pathos & humour to the often unseen servant classes. The handheld camera gives a docu-drama feel to this celebratory look at the upper middle class Hindu Punjabi joint family, while paying tribute to modern Indian public culture of music, television & of course Bollywood.

Biography: Naseeruddin Shah

Naseeruddin Shah is one of the icons of New Indian Cinema along with Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi & Om Puri. Shah was born in Delhi & educated at the National School of Drama in Delhi. Like many of the other actors of his genre, Naseeruddin Shah was first noticed by Shyam Benegal. He acted in Benegals Nishant, Manthan & Bhumika. One of his most intense performances was given in Saeed Mirza s Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai. In the movie, he plays a garage mechanic from Goa who dreams of the expensive cars that he repairs but that are far beyond his reach. The film is set in a Catholic setting, primarily because Mirza did not have the courage to tackle Muslim issues. Naseeruddin Shah has also acted for other New Indian Cinema directors including Mrinal Sen & Sai Paranjpye. Besides these serious roles, he has a penchant for comedy. His roles in Ketan Mehta s films & also in films like Mandi, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron & Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!, have endeared him to the Indian public. Posters Of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen
