Get Carter

DVD Extras [Top] DVD Extras: Get Carter on disc is a classy but lifeless production. Extras include the theatrical trailer, cast & crew details, & six deleted scenes which are too brief to be more than off-cuts. Three spoken & nine subtitled languages are provided, & there's director Stephen Kay's pithy running commentary to enjoy. Even he, however, often sounds at a loss to explain just why the film was made. Thank goodness the original movie is also available on DVD.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Why did Hollywood think it was a good idea to take Get Carter, Mike Hodges classic 1971 study in gangster psychology, transplant the setting from decaying Tyneside to a present-day American metropolis, neuter the screenplay so that precious little of the originals acerbic humour & subtlety remain, & assign the lead role of Jack Carter, memorably taken by Michael Caine in the original, to Sylvester Stallone? No amount of Rocky-cum-Rambo routines can convince you that hes remotely inside the character, even though here Carters psychotic side has been airbrushed out as he seeks revenge for the murder of his brother & rape of his niece.
Miranda Richardson is a wearily sympathetic Gloria, & Rachel Leigh Cook a not-too-bratish Doreen . Mickey Rourke looks suitably wasted as loutish businessman Cyrus; Alan Cumming is an annoyingly smug computer whizz Kinnear , while Michael Caine loses all credibility for his cameo appearance as Cliff Brumby. Did he really need the cash? Biography: Miranda Richardson [Top] British actress Miranda Richardson was born on 3 March 1958, in Southport, Lancashire, the second daughter of William & Marian Richardson. Born to a middle-class family, Richardson showed a desire to step into the character she was playing, indicating that she would go on to be thought of as one of Britains best, if sorely underrated, actresses. After deciding not to become a vet because of her squeamishness, the young Richardson enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis. In 1981, she made her stage debut in Moving at the Queens Theatre in London. Three years later, she made her big screen debut as platinum blonde nightclub hostess Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in the United Kingdom in Mike Newell s critically acclaimed biographical drama, Dance with a Stranger. Her performance in that film won her much praise & within a year, she had been cast by Steven Spielberg to appear in his Second World War drama, Empire of the Sun.

He achieved his greatest successes in a number of action films, notably the Rambo & Rocky series, in both of which he played a largely monosyllabic hero. Stallone was born in New York City & attended high school in Silver Spring, Maryland, at Montgomery Blair High School. He studied drama at the University of Miami, after which he returned to New York & appeared in a few small Off-Broadway plays. His first film roles were very small, including a pornographic film & he did not break through until he starred in Rocky, a film that he wrote & sold with the rider that he would be the lead. Stallone had two Academy Award nominations for Rocky. However, his attempts to expand his range floundered & he was forced to return to the Rocky franchise a number of times to pay for the flops. He tried his hand at directing as well as writing with Rocky II, III & IV & directed & co-wrote the sequel to Saturday Night Fever, Staying Alive.
