Marry in haste, repent at leisure, goes the old adage. Certainly, The War Bride sees the chirpy Cockney Lily with plenty of time to regret her lot. After a whirlwind romance in wartime Britain she marries her handsome Canadian hunk, Charlie . Finding herself pregnant & alone, Charlie having been sent back to the front, she jumps at the chance of a new life abroad when she receives a one-way ticket to Canada.

Unfortunately Charlies tales of his family ranch in Alberta are more fanciful than factual & when she gets there her natural ebullience is tested to the limit by a crumbling shack & a frostbite-inducing welcome from his widowed mother & his crippled sister . They view her townie ways, her penchant for picture houses & scarlet lipstick, with deep suspicion. The only light in these dark days is derived from visits from her longstanding best friend Sophie & a burgeoning friendship with Joe, her sister-in-laws boyfriend.

The film was inspired by the experiences of screenwriter Angela Workmans mother, one of 48,000 war brides who immigrated to Canada during World War II, & it vividly demonstrates that for the unlucky ones the future was far from rosy. The result could have been mawkish but its saved by fine performances from Friel, who is increasingly showing herself to be an actress of some versatility, & the always splendid Brenda Fricker.

Anna Friel is an English actress. Born in Rochdale, Lancashire, Friels acting career took off when she played the lesbian Beth Jordache in the Channel 4 soap opera, Brookside & created a piece of British television history with the first on-screen lesbian kiss. Since then, she has taken the lead in the film Rogue Trader, opposite Ewan McGregor. Friel also made an impression when she appeared in David Lelands Land Girls, which also starred Rachel Weisz & Catherine McCormack & All For Love with Richard E Grant. She has also appeared in A Midsummer Nights Dream with Michelle Pfeiffer. She is currently living with her Actor Boyfriend David Thewlis. Posters Of Anna Friel
