Brown Sugar is a 2002 romance - comedy drama film, written by Michael Elliott & Rick Famuyiwa & directed by Rick Famuyiwa. This movie stars Taye Diggs & Sanaa Lathan. This film is the story of a hip-hop record executive & magazine editor becoming more than friends despite the fact that theyre both involved on other relationships. // Brown Sugar follows the evolving relationship between Sidney, an attractive young African-American woman who has just been appointed the editor-in-chief of the hip-hop review XXL & Dre, a record producer who has been bound to Sidney since their early childhood. The news that Dre is going to be married to Reese, a successful attorney who happens to be stunningly beautiful, sends Sidney into a subconscious tizzy. Suddenly, she doesnt seem to know how to behave around Dre anymore & an impulsive kiss on the eve of his wedding sends fissures of doubt cracking in every direction. I had watched the video Love of my life by Erykah Badu but it was not until I watched Brown Sugar that I really understood its meaning. I am certain that any soul-deep-lover of Hip-Hop will appreciate this movie for its depth & all the Hip-Hop associated metaphors that it contains. The story itself is kind of predictable in many ways, but the movie feels fresh dispite those things. Some of the lines in the movie

Sanaa Lathan is a American actress, born September 19, 1971 in New York City. Her mother, Broadway performer Eleanor McCoy & father, Stan Lathan, who worked for PBS & was exposed at a very young age to the world of entertainment. Her parents divorced when she was young, Lathan spent her teenage years living in both New York City & Beverly Hills, California. Sanaa went to college at the University of California, Berkeley, where she performed with the Black Theatre Workshop & then went on to the Yale School of Drama, performing in several school productions. After college, Lathan decided to live in New York & began performing in off-Broadway productions, including A Movie Star Has to Be Born in Black & White, when her father convinced her to move back to California to seek her fortunes in Hollywood. She has since performed in several television programs including In the House, Moesha, NYPD Blue & Family Matters. Taye Diggs is an American actor. He hails from Brooklyn, New York & was raised in Rochester, New York. He is the oldest of five children; he has two brothers & two sisters. Diggs married Broadway star Idina Menzel on January 11, 2003. Diggs received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theater from Syracuse University. Diggs debut was in the ensemble cast of the five-time Tony Award -winning musical Carousel. In 1996, he got his big break, originating the role of the nasty landlord Benny in Jonathan Larson s Tony Award- & Pulitzer Prize -winning Rent. He then moved from stage to television, with a role on Guiding Light & in 1998 he made his film debut in How Stella Got Her Groove Back. The following year he accepted roles as a tantric sex god in Doug Liman s Go. Audiences could next see him as an AWOL groom in the coming-of-age drama The Wood. Malcolm D Lee s The Best Man featured Diggs as the titular best man suffering from his own pre-wedding jitters. He also starred in the remake of William Castle s The House on Haunted Hill.
