The Jean Coutu Group is a Canadian company & the second largest distributor & retailer of pharmaceuticals & related products in North America. There are 268 franchises throughout Canada & more than 333 in the United States. In the United States Jean Coutu operates as Brooks Pharmacy. The company was co-founded in 1969 by the namesake, as a pharmacy in the East end of Montreal. In 1973 Jean Coutu bought a warehouse & started the franchising operations which would eventually make the company a pharmaceuticals retail conglomerate. In April 2004 Jean Coutu announced that it would pay $2,38 billion US for 1,538 Eckerd drug stores in 13 states in the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic United States, as well as Eckerds headquarters in Florida.
