McClane is waiting for his wife to land at Washingtons Dulles Airport when terrorists take over. He must stop the terrorists before his wifes plane, circling the airport, crashes. The movie is based on a novel by Walter Wager, entitled 58 minutes. a cop must stop terrorists who take an airport hostage while his wife circles overhead. He has 58 minutes to do so before his wifes plane crashes. Die Hard 2 was the first movie to have a digitally-manipulated matte painting, for the very last scene which pulled back from a runway. Die Hard: With a Vengeance, the third film in the Die Hard series starring Bruce Willis as policeman John McClane, adds Samuel L Jackson as Zeus Carver, Willis reluctant partner. The villain in this movie is Simon Gruber, brother of Hans Gruber, a German criminal who was killed by McClane at the climax of Die Hard, the first film in the series. Simon attempts revenge upon McClane while robbing a high security bank vault. Dick Cheney, the future Vice President of the United States, plays a non-speaking bit part as a New York official. Exceptionally well-directed by John McTiernan, Die Hard made Bruce Willis a star back in 1988 & established a new template for action stories. Here the bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Williss visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has with the plentiful fight sequences & the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Williss wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet & William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter.

Director Renny Harlin took the reins for the 1990 sequel, Die Harder, which places Williss New York City cop in harms way again with a gaggle of terrorists. This time, Willis awaits his wifes arrival at Dulles Airport in Washington, DC when he gets wind of a plot to blow up the facility. Noisy, overbearing & forgettable, the film has none of the purity of its predecessors simple story; & it makes a huge miscalculation in allowing a terrible tragedy to occur rather than stretch out the tension. The second sequel, Die Hard with a Vengeance brings Detective John McClane to New York City to face a better villain than in Die Hard 2. Jeremy Irons is the brother of Alan Rickmans Germanic terrorist-thief from the original film. But this bad guy has his sights set higher: on the Federal Reserves cache of gold. As a distraction, he sets McClane running fools errands all over New York, & eventually, McClane attracts an unintentional partner, a Harlem dry cleaner with a chip on his shoulder. Some great action sequences cant obscure the rather large plot holes in the films final 45 minutes.

Renny Harlin is a film director & producer mostly known for action movies. Harlin moved to the US in the mid 1980s & initially started directing low-budget films. Harlin gained attention after directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, which proved to be a success. His next film, the Andrew Dice Clay film The Adventures of Ford Fairlane failed at the box office. However, his next film, Die Hard 2, was a financial success. Afterwards, Harlin has helmed numerous big-budget action films, with mixed success. For instance, 1995 s infamous Cutthroat Island proved to be such a box-office flop that the company that produced it, Carolco, went out of business soon afterwards. Harlin married actress Geena Davis in 1993 and, interestingly, he cast her as the lead in some of his films, including Cutthroat Island & The Long Kiss Goodnight. They were later divorced in 1998.
