A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, & Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kellys Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war & consumerism in the age of Humvees & cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russells third film is a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube & Spike Jonze play a quartet of US soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Husseins army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore war-time atrocities, & conscience demands their aid to Kuwaiti rebels abandoned by President George Bushs fickle war-time policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, & the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending thats mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. ,

Biography: David O Russell
[Top]
David O Russell is one of independent cinemas most successful purveyors of familial dysfunction. This writer, producer & director first thrust his vision into the faces of filmgoers with his 1994 film Spanking the Monkey. A darkly hilarious account of a young mans sexually tortuous & seemingly interminable summer vacation spent in the company of his bored & bedridden mother, the film was a critical favorite, particularly at that years Sundance Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Picture. A native New Yorker, Russell attended Amherst College, where he majored in English & Political Science. Following graduation, he worked as a union organizer in Maine & taught literacy in Boston. Harboring an interest in filmmaking, Russell spent his spare time writing scripts & documenting his experiences; his video documentation of workers conditions led to an internship with Smithsonian World for PBS in Washington, D,C..
