The plot involves DArtagnan & the Three Musketeers & an identical twin brother of King Louis XIV of France. // The 1929 silent version, titled The Iron Mask, was the last silent film produced by & starring, Douglas Fairbanks It starred Fairbanks as DArtagnan, Marguerite de la Motte as his beloved Constance, Nigel De Brulier as the scheming Cardinal Richelieu & Ulrich Haupt as the evil Count De Rochefort. William Bakewell appeared as the royal twins. several short narrations delivered by Fairbanks & a musical score with a few sound effects. In 1952 it was reissued, with the printed intertitles removed & a narration voiced by Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. added. Footnotes in film books are likely to reduce this swashbuckling adventure down to a simple description: it was the first movie to star Leonardo DiCaprio after the phenomenal success of Titanic. As such, The Man in the Iron Mask automatically attracted a box-office stampede of Leos young female fans, but critical reaction was deservedly mixed. Having earned his directorial debut after writing the Oscar-winning script for Mel Gibsons Braveheart, Randall Wallace wrote & directed this ambitious version of the often-filmed classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, & the kings twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis throne. But Louis abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos , one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners in a plot to liberate Philippe & install him as the kings identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion & the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear & offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But its also sidetracked by excessive length & disposable subplots, & for all his post-Titanic star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isnt yet man enough to be fully convincing in his title role. Still, this is an entertaining film, no less enjoyable for falling short of the greatness to which it aspired.

Leonardo DiCaprio is an American actor. He was born Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio in Los Angeles, California, the son of George DiCaprio & Irmalin Idenbirkin. His name allegedly came about because his pregnant mother was standing in front of a Leonardo da Vinci painting at a museum in Italy when he kicked, which made her decide to name him after the famous artist. Leos father, a distributor of comic books, is Italian-American & his mother, a former legal secretary, is German-American. His parents divorced when he was a year old. He grew up in Echo Park. At age five, he appeared on his favorite TV series, Romper Room & was almost fired for misbehaving. He attended John Marshall High School in Los Angeles. He was rejected by an agent early in his career for having a name that sounded too foreign, suggesting that it should be changed to Lenny Williams. But DiCaprio refused. His acting career began in 1990 when he was cast in the role of Garry Buckman on the TV comedy/drama series Parenthood, where he met his best friend, actor Tobey Maguire.
