The Rock is an action movie released on Friday, June 7, 1996 that takes place on Alcatraz Island. The movie stars Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage & Ed Harris. In the film, John Patrick Mason is a British spy imprisoned for stealing microfilm that contained US government secrets, such as the identity of John F Kennedys assassin. He also was the only person to ever escape from Alcatraz, but was later recaptured. Afterwards he was locked in another maximum security prison & any evidence of his existence was erased. Years later, disgruntled Marine Brigadier General Francis X Hummel assembles a team of elite US Marines in an attempt to occupy Alcatraz Island, taking a group of tourists hostage in the process. Hummel threatens to kill all of San Franciscos population with VX gas missiles unless the government agrees to pay money to the families of American commandos lost in classified operations throughout the world & also to him & his men. Between his high-octane debut, Bad Boys, & 1998s wannabe blockbuster Armageddon, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In Rock, a psychotically disgruntled war hero seizes the island prison of Alcatraz & threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognises the men who were killed under Harriss top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz in an attempt to foil Harriss terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, & climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. Its a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, & theres enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable.

Nicolas Cage is an American actor. He was born Nicholas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California, the son of August & Joy Coppola. In 1976, Cages parents divorced & he moved to Beverly Hills with his father. He is the nephew of both Francis Ford Coppola & Talia Shire. Cage changed his name early in order to try to make his own way in acting without benefiting from his uncles reputation. He chose the name Cage after the Marvel comic book hero Luke Cage, Power Man. He had a small role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, most of which ended on the cutting room floor. His next notable roles were in the 1983 movies Rumble Fish & Valley Girl, which was his breakout role. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Leaving Las Vegas. He has developed a reputation for alternating roles in action movies with more serious character-driven dramas & an occasional black comedy. Sir Thomas Sean Connery better known simply as Sean Connery, is a Scottish film actor who has starred in many Hollywood films. Connery is well known to audiences around the world for his role as James Bond. Connery first appeared as Bond in Dr Over 40 years since he first played the role, Connery is still widely regarded as the definitive cinematic incarnation of James Bond, despite credible interpretations of the character by the likes of Roger Moore & Pierce Brosnan. Connery was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He joined the Royal Navy after leaving school & after being discharged on medical grounds went on to a succession of jobs, including labourer & lifeguard.
