Haydn: The Creation
Background Information: Haydn [Top] Joseph Haydn was a leading composer of the classical period. He was the brother of Michael Haydn, a composer & Johann Evangelist Haydn, a tenor singer. A life-long resident of Austria, Haydn spent most of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Eszterházy family, on their remote estate. Being isolated from other composers & trends in music, he was, as he put it, forced to become original. Haydn was born in 1732 in the village of Rohrau near the border with Hungary. His father was Matthias Haydn, a wheelwright who also served as Marktrichter, an office somewhat akin to village mayor. Haydns mother, the former Maria Koller, had previously worked as a cook in the palace of Count Harrach, the presiding aristocrat of Rohrau. Neither parent could read music. However, Matthias was an enthusiastic folk musician, who during the journeyman period of his career had taught himself to play the harp. According to Haydns later reminiscences, his childhood family was extremely musical & frequently sang together & with their neighbors. Background Information: The Creation [Top] The Creation is an oratorio written 1796 - 1798 by Joseph Haydn & considered by many to be his masterpiece. The oratorio depicts & celebrates the creation of the world as described in the biblical Book of Genesis. Haydn was inspired to write a large oratorio during his visits to England in 1791 - 1792 & 1794 - 1795, when he heard oratorios of Handel performed by large forces. It is likely that Haydn wanted to try to achieve results of comparable weight, using the musical language of the mature classical style. The work on the oratorio lasted from October 1796 to April 1798. Haydn found his topic to be inspirational & from his own testimony it appears that the composition of The Creation was for him a profoundly religious experience. He worked on the project to the point of exhaustion & indeed collapsed into a period of illness after he had finally conducted the premiere performance. The Creation was first performed in Vienna before private audiences consisting of the noblemen who had commissioned the work & their guests.
