DVD Extras: Glitter comes complete with a redundant director's commentary that attempts to explain events requiring no explanation, a cheesy trailer which is very sparkly, plus bog-standard discographies & filmographies of the cast & director.--

Set in the mid-1980s against a backdrop of the rising club scene Glitter is the tale of Billie Frank, a modest young singer with a phenomenal talent just hoping to make it big in New York City. Billie hooks up with super-cool club DJ & producer Dice and, as you might guess, hits the big time. But as both her lover & producer, Dice is a bit put out by the labels recommendation that Billie finds a more talented producer, while at the same time her girlfriends are telling her to kick him to the kerb. So thats the basic gist. Throw in an estranged alcoholic mother & the rags-to-riches story is complete, or sadly not as the case might be.

Presumably because the story is an old chestnut that everyone involved knows has been roasted a few too many times already the filmmakers thought it wasnt worth bothering with trying to make the plot even vaguely interesting, & it drags for what seems like days. The two leads are likeable characters, though their performances dont make up for the plodding storyline. Mariah is just Mariah, smiling, singing & equally accomplished at both, whereas Beesley is let down by his shocking American accent. If you like the sound of early US Garage & post-disco dance music then Mariahs soundtrack is a winner but Glitter isnt even one of those films thats so bad its good. Its just dull.

Biography: Mariah Carey
[Top]
Mariah Carey is an American popular music singer, songwriter, record producer & actress, who enjoyed massive commercial success in the 1990s. Careys music has been influenced by rhythm & blues, pop, gospel, hip hop & rock & roll. She is credited as having a five- octave vocal range, one of the greatest ranges of any popular singer. Vocal swoops & trills are an easily recognized feature of her sound & her lavish use of melisma has influenced a whole generation of singers. Carey is one of the best-selling female recording artists ever & surveys generally place her in the top five in overall sales. Most sources indicate that she was the top-selling recording artist of any kind during the 1990s. Her singles have spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other living artist in Billboard history. Careys vocal style can be heard in many top female singers who came after her, including Christina Aguilera, Beyonce Knowles, Alicia Keys, as well as Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino & other female American Idol competitors.
