Ally McBeal - Series 4 Part 1
Background Information: Ally Mcbeal [Top] Ally McBeal was an American television dramedy devised by David E Kelley, with Calista Flockhart in the title role as a young, attractive lawyer working in the fictional Boston law firm Cage & Fish, filled with a cast of similarly young, attractive lawyers who live & love highly melodramatically. The show ran on the FOX network from 1997 to 2002. Despite its legal settings, the show pays little attention to the actual practice of law, using legal manoeuvers as plot devices to push the main thrust of the showforward. The shows use of fantasy sequences to illustrate the characters inner thoughts was particularly notable, along with the characters regular visits to a particular bar where singer & cast member Vonda Shepard regularly performed. Ally McBeal was hugely successful, but received much criticism from TV critics & feminists who found the title character annoying & demeaning to women because of her lack of demonstrated legal knowledge & extreme emotional instability & unreliability. Flockharts visible loss of weight by the second season also caused much media speculation. The individual episode menu does offer a language selection of French & English & the subtitles for the Netherlands & French. You also have the option to select chapters from the specific episodes, along with a previously on Ally McBeal... for that little reminder of whom Ally is dating now. Although standard for a TV DVD release, the 1.33:1 aspect ratio & 2.0 Dolby sound is disappointing for a television series which offers ground-breaking use of special effects.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] The first half of Ally McBeals fourth season starts with that all important question, the one Ally has been waiting for from day one: Ally will you... move in with me?. As always Allys romantic dreams never quite become a reality & the series continues within the Grimm Fairy Tale world of Allys love life. The most important twist this season occurs in the first episode Sex, Lies & Second Thoughts, the departure of Tracy Ullman & Allys current beau, Brian, to be replaced by the series new heart-throb Larry . Initially dating both father & son Ally cannot help but become besotted by Larrys charisma; he being a fellow lawyer further seals their bond, that is until Larrys past comes back to haunt him.
Other highlights include a quirky romance for John , a charity auction leading to an all male fan-club for John & a romantic connection for Mark, though the recipient of his affection may have hidden more than he bargained for. Unfortunately the series was outshone by the real-life drama of Calista Flockharts & Downeys rocky relationship along with Downeys drugs convictions. Even though he won a Golden Globe for his performance, he ultimately had to be dropped from the series. Biography: Calista Flockhart [Top] Calista Kay Flockhart is an American actress.
