In a dazzling & yet frequently maddening bid to bring the movie-musical kicking & screaming into the 21st century, Baz Luhrmanns Moulin Rouge bears no relation to the many previous films set in the famous Parisian nightclub. This may appear to be Paris in the 1890s with can-can dancers, bohemian denizens like Toulouse-Lautrec & ribaldry at every turn, but its really Luhrmanns pop-cultural wonderland, where everyone & everything is encouraged to shatter boundaries of time & texture, colliding & careening in a fast-cutting frenzy that thinks nothing of casting Elton Johns Your Song 80 years before its time. Still, theres something genuine brewing between costars Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman , & their vocal talents are impressive enough to match Luhrmanns orgy of extraordinary sets, costumes & digital wizardry, -,

Baz Luhrmann takes a shot at reinventing Shakespeares story of star-crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet as a visual pastiche inspired by MTV imagery, Hong Kong action-picture clichés, & Luhrmanns own taste for deliberate, gaudy excess. The result is explosive chaos, both in terms of bullets & visual sensibility, which some may find impossible to stick with for more than a few minutes. Leonardo DiCaprio & Claire Danes play the leads, though not with much distinction, while Pete Postlethwaite makes a huge impression as this movies version of Friar Laurence. The film is successful in spots, but overall its fever-dream game plan is difficult to ride out.,

Claire Catherine Danes is an American film actress. She had her breakthrough as protagonist Angela Chase in the groundbreaking 1994 teenage drama series My So-Called Life, for which she won a Golden Globe Award & received an Emmy nomination. Afterwards she turned down the female lead in Titanic, but shortly afterward starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in William Shakespeares Romeo & Juliet. When she was 9 she decided to start taking acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Studio. For many years, she & Australian singer Ben Lee had been dating, but their relationship ended in 2003. Ewan Gordon McGregor is a Scottish film actor who has had significant success in both mainstream & art house movies. // McGregor attended Kirkaldy College 1988/1989 to study drama appearing in several roles there & appearing in the Tron Theatre, Glasgow at the end of term. McGregor came to prominence through his role as the heroin addict Mark Renton in the film version of Irvine Welsh s Trainspotting. This role immediately followed his movie debut performance in Danny Boyle s 1994 film Shallow Grave. McGregor has also been featured as the male romantic lead in Hollywood films such as Moulin Rouge! & Down With Love & in the British film Little Voice. He received excellent reviews for his performance as an amoral drifter mixed up in murder in the rather bleak indie British film Young Adam, which co-starred the acclaimed British actress Tilda Swinton. Baz Luhrmann is an Australian film director. His films are distinguished by their flamboyant & colourful theatricality. Strictly Ballroom, starring Paul Mercurio & Tara Morice. Romeo & Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Claire Danes. Moulin Rouge!, starring Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor. He has also directed the opera La Bohème. Luhrmann was working on a biographical film about Alexander the Great, tentatively starring DiCaprio & Kidman, but the release of Oliver Stone s film on the same subject in 2004 eventually persuaded him to shelve the project. His current project is in development, but its subject matter remains unknown. Baz Luhrmann has listed Bollywood films as a major influence on his work, especially on Moulin Rouge! Luhrmann is also credited with a 1999 UK number one single entitled Everybodys Free. Luhrmann married Catherine Martin, the production designer on all of his films, on 26 January 1997.
