La Cage aux Folles is both a 1979 French film & a 1983 Broadway musical. The plot revolves around a gay couple - Georges, the owner of a St. Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment & Albin, his star attraction - & the adventures that ensue when Georges son brings home his fiancees ultra-conservative parents to meet them. The film, directed by Edouard Molinaro, starred Ugo Tognazzi & Michel Serrault. A shrewd farce, it won over audiences with hilarious sight gags, uproarious complications & a tender & touching conclusion. It ran for well over a year at the Paris Theater, an art house in New York City, as well as theaters throughout the country, in both urban & rural areas. For years it remained the most successful foreign film to be released in the United States & it eventually spawned two sequels, neither as clever or amusing. In 1996, a highly successful American version entitled The Birdcage, directed by Mike Nichols, was released.

It tells the story of a gay couple who, when one mans son from a previous liaison brings home his fiancée, masquerade as husband & wife for their prospective in-laws. Le Cage Aux Folles is saved from becoming an exercise in silliness by the heartfelt characterisations of the gay nightclub owners. Michel Serrault is a French actor. He was born in Brunoy, Essonne, France. La cage aux folles 3 - Elles se marient. Deux heures moins le quart avant Jesus-Christ. La situation est grave. mais pas désespérée. Cest pas parce quon a rien à dire quil faut fermer sa gueule. Tout le monde il est beau, tout le monde il est gentil.
