Erin Brockovich is a 2000 movie which dramatizes the story of Erin Brockovich s first fight against PG&E. It was directed by Steven Soderbergh & featured Julia Roberts in the lead role for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. The real Erin Brockovich has a cameo appearance in this film as a waitress named Julia. The movie was a huge hit & earned over US$100 million–the highest gross for a movie based on a true story. A lone woman, armed only with indomitable sass & her native wit, goes up against the corporate big boys & beats the bejesus out of them. As a story line its hardly new, but Steven Soderberghs film keeps it exhilaratingly fresh & lively, thanks not least to his lead actress. Seizing the role of the smart, mouthy, aggressively working-class Erin Brockovich with both hands, Julia Roberts gives it everything shes got & then some. Shes well matched by Albert Finney as her grouchy but good-hearted boss & Aaron Eckhart as a sympathetic biker. The storys based, by all accounts fairly closely, on actual events, when the real Erin brought a massive lawsuit against utilities giant Pacific Gas & Electric for spreading toxic pollution. Rather than confine the action to courtroom shenanigans, Soderbergh takes us out under Southern Californias pitiless skies & along the dirt-poor roads where most of PG&Es blue-collar victims live, letting us feel the ground-down exhaustion of their lives. But though its rooted in reality, the films anything but solemn. The scripts sharp & funny, full of unexpected twists; & Roberts, flaunting herself outrageously in an eye-popping array of push-up bras & micro-miniskirts, has never been better.

Steven Soderbergh is an American film director. Soderberghs first film, Sex, Lies & Videotape which he both wrote & directed, won the prestigious Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival & became a worldwide commercial success. He was at the time the youngest ever filmmaker to receive that award. In 2001 he received an Academy Award for Best Director for Traffic, while another of his films Erin Brockovich featuring Julia Roberts, was also nominated in the same category. His subsequent two films Oceans Eleven & Full Frontal, also had a role for Roberts. Other regular actors to work with Soderbergh are Luis Guzmán, Don Cheadle, Catherine Keener & George Clooney, with whom he co-owns the production company Section Eight Productions that produced films including Far From Heaven, Insomnia & Clooneys directing debut Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Soderbergh often works as his own director of photography under the alias of Peter Andrews. In March 2002, Soderbergh was elected First Vice President of the Directors Guild of America.
