Lara Cox appeared in the second half of the third season as Finn, but was never given credit in the opening credits. William deVray played Ed Malone in the two-hour telefilm that preceeded the series. David Orth took over the role at the start of the series proper. The character of Arthur Summerlee, as portrayed by Michael Sinelnikoff, was killed off in the first season finale, but returned once as a ghost during Season Two. During the third season both David Orth & Jennifer ODell were absent from the series for several consecutive episodes, due in part to financial constraints.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] Not the Steven Spielberg blockbuster, this Lost World is a splendid BBC TV dramatisation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles famous adventure story. Bob Hoskins makes an unusually genial Professor Challenger, far less of a bully than Doyles character, but his slightly stereotyped companions are nicely filled out by a solid cast. James Fox is Challengers more timid but still covertly adventurous rival, Tom Ward is the moustachioed big game hunter who faces an Allosaurus with an elephant gun, & Matthew Rhys plays the tagalong reporter hoping to impress his faithless fiancée.
As usual, the adaptation adds a woman, orphaned jungle girl Elaine Cassidy, to the expedition, & an interesting villain beefs up the travelogue by marooning Challengers gang on the South American plateau where dinosaurs, cavemen & Indians coexist eventfully. The Walking with Dinosaurs-style effects work well for the TV frame, but the real success is in integrating the Boys Own adventuring with subtle eco-awareness, complex character interplay & the reliable wonder of soaring Pteranodons & Carnosaur attacks. Biography: Bob Hoskins [Top] Robert William Bob Hoskins is a British actor who specialises in playing Cockney rough diamonds and/or gangsters & in family films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England, Hoskins had a number of occupations before going into acting & made his stage debut in 1969. He hit the big time in 1978 when he starred in Dennis Potter s successful BBC drama serial, Pennies From Heaven. His performances in British films such as The Long Good Friday & Mona Lisa won him the approval of the critics and, in the case of the latter, an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He has also appeared in Super Mario Bros., which was considered a flop. Hoskins is known for his cold bum test which he uses whenever he receives a new script. He takes it to the lavatory to read & if its an enthralling script, his buttocks will have gone cold due to the time elapsed. He made a cameo appearance as a rock bands manager in the Pink Floyd film The Wall, where his one-word expletive exclamation was the films only dialogue. He has also directed films.
