Johnny Thunders, born John Anthony Genzale, Jr, was a rock & roll guitarist & singer, first with the New York Dolls, the proto-punk glam rockers of the early 70s. During the late 70s, he was a familiar figure on the New York punk scene, both with the Heartbreakers & as a solo artist. His guitar work was highly influential in punk rock music. Under the name Johnny Volume, Genzale began performing in high school with Johnny & the Jaywalkers ; after leaving that band, he joined Actress, which featured future Dolls Arthur Killer Kane & Billy Murcia. Actress became the New York Dolls in 1971 & Genzale renamed himself Johnny Thunders. After recording two acclaimed but unsuccessful albums, the Dolls broke up. The early Dolls recordings are still in print today & continue to influence young bands with their trash/glam/punk attitude. He formed the Heartbreakers with Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan & Television guitarist Richard Hell, who left soon after to form Richard Hell & the Voidoids.

If youre a big fan of Johnny Thunders youll probably want to check this out but if you want to find out what he was like its probably better to go with the Dead or Alive DVD with the heartbreakers.

It looks like its filmed on Video that has deteriorated a little & is a later performance without any of the Heartbreakers & with a singer who sings some of the songs in between the Johnny Thunders songs. Its pretty cool in that Johnny seems very together & you get some great guitar work from him as well & his voice is in good form.

The sound quality isnt amazing but better than some of the live bootlegs Ive lived with over the years & its a nice look at the shows Johnny Thinders was doing shortly before he died.

Im glad I saw it but also glad I rented it. 10 years ago though, Id have bought it & watched it every day for a year.
