Background Information: Ripping Yarns
[Top]
Ripping Yarns was a British television comedy series loosely in the style of Monty Pythons Flying Circus, written by former Pythons Michael Palin & Terry Jones. Each episode neatly parodied some pre- war schoolboy genre or other. The series grew out of a one-off BBC programme called Tomkinsons Schooldays, loosely inspired by Tom Browns Schooldays by Thomas Hughes. Palin & Jones both wrote & starred in multiple roles. Palin & Jones then developed the idea into a series. Following a repeat of Tomkinsons Schooldays as the de facto pilot episode, a further five episodes were screened in 1977. A second series of three episodes followed in 1979. Jones did not appear in any of the later 8 episodes & Palin usually confined himself to one or two roles per episode. The pilot was shot on videotape with filmed exterior scenes & has a laugh track. The remaining episodes were all shot on film. They were also originally shown with laugh tracks, but with a couple of exceptions these have been omitted from repeats.

The Amazon synopsis describes this as the full set, which is not true - there were 9 episodes made in total. Many of the reviews above add to the confusion. Thanks to the reviewer above who mentions the 3rd DVD Even more Ripping Yarns, which contains the missing three episodes. I just want to clarify that the first six refers to the first 6 released on DVD, NOT the first 6 made by Palin & co . The 2-DVD box set in fact contains a mix from series 1 & 2. According to the BBC web site, series 2 was: Whinfreys Last Case, Golden Gorden & Roger of the Raj. The other 6 episodes were series 1 . Hope somebody finds this useful! As for the content - well, they were all classics, werent they??

He is famous for being a member of Monty Pythons Flying Circus in which he generally played roles that called for manic enthusiasm, or unflappable calmness. He went on to read History at Brasenose College, Oxford. After Monty Python, Palin subsequently collaborated with Python writing partner Terry Jones on the television comedy series Ripping Yarns. In later years, Palin rejoined Cleese for the movies A Fish Called Wanda & Fierce Creatures & played an information retrieval specialist in fellow Python Terry Gilliam s Brazil. He has assisted Transport 2000 & others with campaigns on transport policy issues, particularly those relating to urban areas. More recently, he has presented several series of travel programmes on television; Michael Palin. Posters Of Around The World In 80 Days
