David Blaine - Showman
Background Information: David Blaine [Top] David Blaine is an American illusionist & stunt performer born in Brooklyn, New York City. He made his name as a performer of close-up magic, usually working on the streets. Amongst magicians this is commonly known as street magic. Blaines act includes a variation of the Balducci levitation illusion & bringing apparently dead flies back to life. Street Magic. Mystifier. He later turned his attention to feats of endurance, including being buried alive for five days & spending 61 hours encased in ice. In 2002 Blaine stood on a tiny platform at the top of a 100 foot high pole in Bryant Park for 35 hours. In 2003 Blaine lived in a transparent perspex box for 44 days, supposedly without food. The show-business press often describe Blaine as a modern day Harry Houdini & indeed Blaine himself has cited Houdini as one of his inspirations. On Monday 22 May 2002 Blaine began a stunt he named Vertigo. Blaine was lifted by crane onto a 105 feet high pillar in Bryant Park, New York. Posters Of David BlaineDVD Extras [Top] DVD Extras: Get ready for abject frustration as you spend ages working out how to access the disc's beautiful secrets. Once you do, there are lots of little surprises to enjoy--such as Blaine being told off by the Memphis police, a mini photo gallery, levitating money in Haiti & five minutes of making the DVD, where you see a very bored crew at his commentary recording. The main feature commentary is quite sporadic in how much he has to say, but is actually very revealing. Don't expect any giveaway explanations, but it is a genuinely fascinating insight into the mind responsible for some truly spectacular feats of magic.
Editorial DVD Review [Top] The real magic of David Blaine is in his command of an all-walks-of-life audience, but featured here is the Frozen in Time show that follows the preparation & aftermath of his three days & nights entombed in a six-ton block of ice. The footage is often quite alarming, as is a narration explaining his state of mind at the end. Visited by his girlfriend, Kevin Spacey & Michael J Fox , its all about re-affirming the reality of the situation. Intercut with the Times Square footage is plenty of the street magic Blaine excels at. Confounding the NY Knicks & increasingly eccentric passers-by, youll see him resurrect dead animals, cry the diamond from a womans ring & bafflingly show off a tattoo of a complete strangers girlfriend. Fans are treated to his very first video footage test of the show format as well as the dearly departed Tarko the Great.
