Deep Impact is a 1998 motion picture directed by Mimi Leder starring Tea Leoni, Morgan Freeman, Elijah Wood & Robert Duvall. The inter-related stories of the film describe events which take place surrounding the discovery of a comet named Wolf-Biederman due to impact the earth & its subsequent approach to our planet. A competing space impact film, Armageddon, was released at approximately the same time as Deep Impact ; this was also during a time when two movies featuring volcanos exploding were released side by side. Deep Impact is generally considered to be more realistic than Armageddon & had a stronger emphasis on the effect on society. Posters Of Deep Impact

A great big rock hits the earth, & lots of people die. Thats pretty much all there is to Deep Impact, & most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen , would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned & mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet thats headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may be the most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramers atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father & daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; & an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera, so that his little girl wont realise that hes been struck blind. Deep Impact stars Morgan Freeman as the president of the United States.
