Background Information: Carry On Behind
[Top]
The Carry On films were a long-running series of British low-budget comedy films made at Pinewood Studios near Windsor. They are seen as one of the best examples of British humour, especially double entendre. The series began with Carry On Sergeant in 1958, about a group of recruits on National Service & was sufficiently successful that others followed. The film got its name from the Val Guest film Carry On Admiral & became the standard naming for the series, with only a few exceptions. occasionally they rose to inspired heights, as in Carry On Cleo, where the stabbed Julius Caesar staggered back, crying Infamy! Infamy! Theyve all got it in for me! The period in which the films were made co-incided with the so-called sexual revolution & the later films were considerably more relaxed towards sexual jokes & situations than the earlier ones. Many parodied examples of more serious popular films. One of their less successful films was the 1967 film Carry On Follow that Camel, which was an attempt to break into the lucrative American film market.

The discovery of valuable archaeological remains beneath a holiday caravan site is the cause of the mayhem in Carry On Behind. That said, the sub-plots, which involve Windsor Davies & Jack Douglas as a pair of randy fishermen, a couple sharing their caravan with an outsize dog , the obligatory giggling dolly birds & so on are all typical grist to the Carry On mill. The location is of course as bleakly miserable as such a place could ever be & will bring a frisson of familiarity to many Brits. Widely held to be one of the best in the series, the film would in fact have been a rather lacklustre effort were it not for the superbly over-the-top presence of Elke Sommer, whose performance as the strapping assistant to archaeologist Roland Crump seems like a wonderful hybrid of Ute Lemper & Charlie Dimmock.

Biography: Kenneth Williams
[Top]
Kenneth Charles Williams was a British comic actor, star of over twenty Carry On. films & notable radio comedies with Tony Hancock & Kenneth Horne, as well as a witty raconteur on a wide range of subjects. Kenneth Williams was born near Euston station, London, the son of a hairdresser. He was educated at Lyulph Stanley School. His relationship with his parents - he hated his father & adored his mother - was key to the development of his personality. Williams apprenticed as a draughtsman & joined the army aged 18. He was part of the Royal Engineers survey section in Bombay when he had his first experience of going on stage with Combined Services Entertainment. After the war, his career began with a number of roles in repertory theatre, but few serious roles were to lend themselves to his style of delivery. His failure to be established as a serious dramatic actor would disappoint him, but it was his potential as a comic actor which gained him his big break. Posters Of Kenneth Williams
