Love, Honour And Obey
Editorial DVD Review [Top] It must have seemed like fun at the time: a group of mates got together to play gangsters, ran around Londons streets waving guns, dishing out beatings & shouting profanities at the top of their mockney lungs. Its the kind of game that any group of lads with a camcorder & a six-pack might indulge in on a Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, these particular mates happen to be famous, so the result, Love, Honour & Obey, actually saw the dark of cinemas.
Ray Winstone is Ray, head honcho of a North London crime outfit; Sean Pertwee is Sean, leader of the South London pack. Their organisations co-exist with a minimum of fuss, based on respect for each others turf. Then Rays nephew, Jude , introduces his mate, Jonny , into the firm & the equilibrium goes up in gun smoke. Jonnys a hothead who disrespects Rays rules & instigates a private feud with Matthew , his opposite number in Seans gang, & soon there are gun battles raging through the capital. Perhaps directors Dominic Anciano & Ray Burdis regard their work as avant-garde, a deconstruction of the movie-making myth or a dissection of genre, or maybe they are just having a laugh at our expense. Either way the result is tortuous, egotistical film making. To be fair, Love, Honour & Obey is at least a step up from their last effort, Final Cut, in which much the same cast again paraded under their own names & made utter fools of themselves, but thats like saying the Zeebrugge ferry disaster wasnt as bad as the Titanic. Still, at least its not all boys playing with their penis extensions: theres also Sadie Frost & Denise Van Outen. Biography: Ray Winstone [Top] Raymond Andrew Winstone, better known as Ray Winstone, is a British actor. He met his wife, Elaine, while filming That Summer ; they have three daughters. As a boy, Winstone trained as a boxer. He won the London Schoolboy Championship three times & twice represented England. After leaving school he gave up boxing & studied drama at Corona School in Hammersmith, where he spent one year before being asked to leave. Winstone talked his way into an audition with the BBC for a 1977 play called Scum. He was cast in a leading role, but the play was judged unsuitable by the BBC & was not shown until 1991. In 1979, the play was turned into a film, with Winstone playing a tough newcomer to a borstal. Winstones role in Scum seems to have set a mould for many of his other parts; he is frequently cast as a tough or violent man. His film roles have included parts in Quadrophenia, That Summer, Ladybird Ladybird, Nil by Mouth, Face, Sexy Beast & Ripleys Game. Winstone has also been cast against type in some films in which he reveals a softer side.
