America: A Tribute to Heroes was a benefit concert organized in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center & The Pentagon by the four major United States television networks. It featured a number of national & international entertainers performing to raise money for the victims & their families, particularly but not limited to the New York City firefighters. It aired September 21, 2001, uninterrupted & commercial-free. On a dark stage illuminated by hundreds of candles, twenty-one artists performed songs of mourning & hope, while various actors & other celebrities delivered short spoken messages. Some of the musicians including Neil Young & Eddie Vedder were heard working the phone banks taking pledges. The money raised amounted to about $30 million & was given to the United Way s September 11 Telethon Fund. Bruce Springsteen. My City of Ruins  , a song he had performed at only a few New Jersey shows.

Tribute albums & concerts come & go, but America: A Tribute to Heroes may well stand the test of time. Recorded just 10 days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, this two-hour US TV telethon has an appropriately sombre tone; its also refreshingly unpretentious & ego-free, with no audience & no onscreen identification, of the musical artists or the actors & others who speak between songs. There are some passionate & moving performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Limp Bizkit & friends, Neil Young & several more, easily eclipsing the couple of outright turkeys . To watch the programme after the horror may have started to fade is to be reminded of the extraordinary emotions the tragic events aroused; & while pop music may be superfluous in the big picture, its power to inspire & perhaps even heal is something to behold.,
