Background Information: Alien 3

Alien³ is a science fiction / horror movie that opened May 22, 1992. It was the feature film debut of director David Fincher. Resurrection. The film was poorly received upon its initial release by critics & fans of the preceding two films in the franchise. It was considered not to have advanced the story in any meaningful way, instead merely rehashing the first films formula of a monster lurking in dark corridors killing off people one by one. This stood in stark contrast to Aliens, which freshly presented itself as an action movie, establishing its own identity rather than trying to imitate what made Alien so successful. Other unfavorable comparisons to Aliens were made, especially in the way Alien³ ’s large supporting cast of prisoners lacked any individuality, being little more than stock characters whose sole purpose was to be killed by the alien. In Aliens, while many of the Colonial Marines could be considered stereotypes, Cameron still took pains to make most of them defined characters.

DVD Extras: The clarity of the digital picture throws light into some of Fincher's darker recesses, but is unkind to the primitive computer animation.

Compared to the Alien DVD there are few extras, although a making of featurette that covers all three movies is included.

Directed by stylemaster David Fincher, who went on to greater things with Seven & Fight Club, Alien 3 was the least successful of the Alien series at the box-office. Ripley, the only survivor of her past mission, awakens on a prison planet in the far corners of the solar system. As she tries to recover, she realises that not only has an alien got loose on the planet, the alien has implanted one of its own within her. As she battles the prison authorities in trying to kill the alien, she must also cope with a distinctly shortened life span that awaits her. But the striking imagery makes for muddled action & the script confuses it further. The ending looks startling but it takes a long time, & a not particularly satisfying journey, to get there.

Biography: David Fincher
[Top]
David Fincher is a film director. Born in Denver, Colorado, Fincher started as an animator at Industrial Light & Magic in 1980 & stayed until 1984. In 1986, he founded the video-production company Propaganda Films. He directed big-budget videos for artists such as Madonna, George Michael, Aerosmith & the Rolling Stones, as well as commercials. Like a number of other video directors, including Julien Temple, Russell Mulcahy & Spike Jonze, he then moved into film. His debut was Alien³, which was then the most expensive picture by a first-time director, but was a financial & critical disappointment. Despite this initial failure, Finchers career rebounded with his next film, the dark thriller Se7en. This film, along with the complex & controversial Fight Club has put Fincher in the forefront of his post-video director contemporaries. Even Finchers more conventional work, such as The Game & Panic Room contains his distinctive dark photography with innovative uses of computer graphics. Posters Of Panic Room
