Background Information: Bean
[Top]
Mr. Bean is a British comedy television series, starring Rowan Atkinson. The programme was produced by Tiger Television, later renamed Tiger Aspect productions, for Thames Television & originally shown on ITV. In the United States the show has been broadcast on PBS intermittently over the past few years & is now available on DVD. In the show, Atkinson plays a selfish, sometimes ingenious buffoon who frequently gets into hilarious situations due to his various schemes & contrivances. The humour of the show is very physical & the main character speaks very little, if at all, during most shows. It features Mr. Bean trying to undertake what would normally be considered simple tasks, such as going swimming, redecorating or taking an exam. One of his most beloved acts is stuffing a turkey & getting it stuck on his head. The humour largely comes from his original solutions to any problems & a total disregard for others when solving them. Mr. Bean is the only main character in the programme & he doesnt share the spotlight with anyone else.

Translating Rowan Atkinsons Mr Bean character from British television to the big screen takes a bit of a toll, but there are some hilarious sequences in this popular comedy. The eponymous Bean, a boy-man twit with a knack for getting into difficult binds , is a London museum guard who is sent to Los Angeles in the company of the famous painting Whistlers Mother. Hes mistaken as an art expert by the well-meaning curator of an LA museum, but Beans famously eccentric behaviour soon causes the poor guy to almost lose his family & job. The insularity of Beans TV world is sacrificed in this film, & that change diminishes some of the characters appeal. But Atkinson is a man naturally full of comedy, & he doesnt let his fans down.

Rowan Sebastian Atkinson is a British comedian & actor. He toured with a one-man show, with Angus Deayton as the straight man. The one-man show was filmed for television & is still popular on video. It characterises Atkinsons comedy style, which is tightly planned & scripted, often physically-based comedy - comedy as performance, rather than comedy as observation or discussion, observant of life as many of the routines were. Atkinsons talent for physical comedy has seen him described as the man with the rubber face. In 2003, he was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest people in British comedy. Atkinson studied electrical engineering at Newcastle University then at Oxford, starting his comedy career at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is married with two children. His major hobby is apparently fast cars, having written for the British magazine Car & owning & racing Aston Martin vehicles. He holds a UK HGV licence.
