Background Information: The High Crusade
[Top]
The High Crusade is a novel by Poul Anderson. First published in 1960 by Doubleday, it is a work of science fiction. It is still in print with a paperback edition issued by IBook in 2003 with ISBN 0743475283. The High Crusade explores the situation that would arise if extraterrestrials had visited Earth many centuries ago. Andersons work was nominated for a Hugo Award. In 1994, The High Crusade was made into a movie of the same name. It is 1345 AD & in the English town of Ansby, Sir Roger, Baron de Tourneville, is recruiting a military force in order to assist King Edward III in the Hundred Years War against France. Suddenly, an enormous silver spacecraft lands outside the town. It is a scouting craft for the Wersgorix Empire, a brutal dominion light-years from our solar system. The Wersgorix attempt to take over Earth by testing the feasibility of its settlement. However, the aliens are caught off-guard by the angered Englishmen, who mistake the craft for a French trick. The villagers & soldiers in Ansby storm the craft & kill all but one Wersgor, Branithar.

Ive just received this from a Canadian supplier through an Amazon order, & this is not aimed at their service .

However, it appears there are TWO versions of this film, the British one with the redubbed aliens having Scottish accents & heaps of sarcasm, & the US version. The version I received after ordering it from here however, does not have the redub, & the aliens have silly squeaky voices, & a subtitle translation. As for my rating, the Scottish version would have gotten a 5, this one only deserves a 2.

While this is still watchable, & fairly funny, its a pale shadow of the British release - if youre expecing an alien to complain about the stupid English or telling Roger of Journingham hes not getting a sausage, Im afraid youre going to be disappointed.
