Background Information: Hangmen Also Die [Top] On May 27, 1942, the Nazi Reich Protector of occupied Bohemia & Moraviawas assassinated by Czech resistance fighters parachuted from a British plane. Heydrich was the number-two man in the Nazi SS & a chief architect of the Holocaust. Hangmen Also Die, directed by the legendary German director Fritz Lang, is the story of Heydrichs assassination in fictionalized form. the money he earned from the project allowed him to write The Visions of Simone Marchand, Schweik in the Second World War & an adaptation of Websters The Duchess of Malfi. Hanns Eisler was nominated for an Academy Award for his musical score. The collaboration of three prominent refugees from Nazi Germanyis an example of the influence this generation of German exiles had in American culture.
Biography: Brian Donlevy [Top] Brian Donlevy was an American actor, known for many film roles from the 1930s through to the 1960s. this was not true, although it remains a popular biographical myth. After lying about his age, Donlevy signed up to the American army in 1916 & saw service as a pilot during the First World War. After the war, he remained in the army for a short time before he decided to make the move into acting. He began his career in New York in the early 1920s, over the course of the decade appearing in many theatre productions & also winning an increasing number of silent film parts. Donlevys break into major film roles came in 1935, when he was cast in the Edward G Robinson film Barbary Coast. A large amount of successful film work followed, with several important parts, before in 1939 he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Sergeant Markoff in Beau Geste, although the Oscar went to Thomas Mitchell for Stagecoach.
