The Big Lebowski is a 1998 film written & directed by Joel & Ethan Coen starring Jeff Bridges as the The Dude, or Jeff Lebowski. Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Elliott & Coen regulars John Goodman, John Turturro & Steve Buscemi are also featured. The Dude, Jeff Lebowski, has his home invaded & his rug urinated upon by thugs looking to collect a debt incurred by the wife of multi-millionaire Jeff Lebowski who is wheelchair-bound and, as the Dude points out, probably keeps a tidier house. At the insistence of his bowling buddy Walter, the Dude attempts to obtain a replacement rug from Lebowski & quickly becomes entangled in a kidnapping scheme involving Lebowskis wife. The Dude - cannabis-smoking anti-hero, whose ambition is limited to bowling & drinking White Russians. He is unemployed. Walter Sobchak - a Jewish convert & Vietnam War vet whose mental instability provides much of the comedy of the film; he is paranoid & his constant interference in the events of the story are the impetus for much of the action. The Coen brothers have done it again. Mixing in Leninist philosphy, mistaken identity, crazy characters, a kidnapping plot, & a deep love of bowling, they have unleashed upon an unsuspecting world the many glories of The Big Lebowski. Two mobsters break into the apartment of Jeff Lebowski in the errant belief that they are accosting a millionaire - not the laid-back, unemployed, stuck in the 70s Jeff Lebowski who calls himself Dude. Through a complex kidnapping plot, the Dude & his budy are swept up in a hilarious Coenesque comedy/thriller of extortion, double-cross, deception, embezzlement, sex & dope.
