The Who: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970
Background Information: The Who [Top] The Who is a British rock band. They were noted for the dynamism of their live performances & for their thoughtful music, including Tommy, one of the first rock operas. While not a heavy metal band themselves, their distorted guitars, epic songwriting & over-the-top stage show were an influence on the genre. In its earliest days, prior to Keith Moon joining, the band was known as The Detours & played mostly rhythm & blues. They eventually changed their name to The Who & Keith joined soon after, making the classic line-up complete. For a short period, under the management of Peter Meaden, they changed their name to The High Numbers during which time they released a mostly unsccessful single under that name, designed to appeal to their mostly mod fans. When Zoot Suit/Im The Face failed to chart, they quickly reverted back to The Who. The rest, as they say, is history. They became one of the most popular bands among the British Mods, a social movement of the early 60s who rejected the greaser music favored by the Rockers. Posters Of The WhoBiography: John Entwistle [Top] John Alec Entwistle was the bass guitar player for The Who. John Alec Entwistle was born in Chiswick, a London suburb, in 1944. He joined Roger Daltrey in a pre-Who band, The Detours, in the early 1960s. Sometimes known as Ox, he was generally regarded as the quiet person in The Who. Bill Wyman described him as the quietest man in private but the loudest man on stage. John Entwistle was a talented songwriter & artist. Entwistle also contributed many backing vocals & horn performances to the group. In addition to his work with the Who, Entwistle was an accomplished solo artist, releasing a number of solo albums beginning in the 1970s. Entwistles contribution to rock bass playing was to create a driving lead role for the instrument. Rarely captured well in the studio, his style & sound was fully developed by the time of the Whos A Quick One performance for the Rolling Stones 1968 Rock & Roll Circus, as well as the seminal 1970 Live at Leeds concert recording.

In addition, he has enjoyed a successful solo music career & has acted in a large number of film, theater & television roles. Daltrey was born in the Shepherds Bush section of London, the same working class neighborhood that produced fellow Who members Pete Townshend & John Entwistle. He showed academic promise as a child in the English public school system, ranking at the top of his class on examinations that led to his enrollment at the Acton County Grammar School for boys. His parents, Harry & Irene, hoped he would eventually continue on to study at a university, but obeying the rules & learning from his instructors was not in the plans of the self-described school rebel. He made his first guitar from a block of wood & formed a band called, The Detours. When his father bought him an Epiphone guitar in 1959, he became the lead guitarist for the band. Soon after, interested in nothing but rock & roll, he was expelled from school.
