Wing Chun

Consumer DVD Review [Top] This film gave me a nice surprise to find it had an emphasis on the female side of kung-fu. The action was still as fast & furious as any other of Yuen Woo-Pings films & if the choreography had been that much better , I would have rated this film 5 stars.
The plot is true to the story of how Wing Chun Kung Fu left South Shaolin Temple to be taught to the general public, which is interesting from a historical point of view. The storyline does become a bit tedious at times however, as the usual misinterpreted identity plot device which appears in many Hong Kong movies becomes a bit over-used. Never-the-less I expected nothing more. The overall quality of the film is increased by the skill & presence of other top-grade performers such as Donnie Yen, although Michelle Yeoh still gives as good as she gets with a show comparable to that in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For people who are interested in Kung-fu films as a genre, or interested in the feminine side of martial arts, then this film is guaranteed to please. It is also unique in showing Wing Chun Kung Fu in use; a style not often included in such films because of the more popular North Shaolin style. Biography: Donnie Yen [Top]
Biography: Michelle Yeoh [Top] Dato Michelle Yeoh is a Hong Kong -based actress & dancer, sometimes billed as Michelle Khan. Yeoh is a Chinese Malaysian born in Ipoh, Malaysia. Despite having no formal martial arts training, Yeoh is best known for her roles in action & martial arts movies. She relies on her dance training & instructors & does many of her own stunts. She is one of the few women Jackie Chan allows to do her own stunts in his movies; they first worked together on a commercial in 1984. Yeoh learned English & Malay before Chinese & still cannot read Chinese. In some of her early films, she recited her dialogue by rote. In 2001, Yeoh was given the title of dato by the Sultan of Perak, her native state. Dato is an honorary Malaysian title somewhat like an English knighthood & it lies below the ranks of Dato Seri, Tan Sri & Tun. Like many other Hong Kong stars, Yeoh has attempted to break into Hollywood.
